General Bipin Rawat.

A Facebook page called “I Support Doval” posted a fake quote ascribed to Indian Army chief General Bipin Rawat, on Sunday.

The text in Hindi with an image of Gen Rawat stated (roughly translated): “Army Chief Bipin Rawat said that to become a leader, it should be made mandatory to serve the country for five years in the Army. Believe it or not, India’s 80% garbage will be cleared automatically. How many people agree with his statement? Share this, if you do agree.”

The “I Support Doval” page has over 1.7 million followers and the post has been shared 3,000 times and liked over 5,000 times by the time of writing this.

The same image carrying same content had been shared in the past. The Indian Army’s Additional Directorate General of Public Information, through its official Facebook page and Twitter handle, had issued a clarification on September 11 that the statement attributed to Gen Rawat was false. However, the “I Support Ajit Doval” page, which posts fake quotes and news regularly, shared this again despite the Army’s clarification.

Dubious pages and handles on social media routinely circulate fake quotes and news attributed to prominent public figures as a part of political propaganda.
