Punjab chief minister Captain Amarinder Singh claimed everyone has the right to voice their mind and it is up to former cricketer and Punjab cabinet minister Navjot Singh Sidhu to explain his stand. Sidhu’s comments on the Pulwama terror attack seemed to absolve Pakistan of its involvement in suicide bombing, which left over 42 CRPF personnel dead.

Amrinder said, “Sidhu was a cricketer while I was a soldier, and both have different viewpoints on things”, and added, “Sidhu does not understand defence intricacies and had possibly reacted out of friendly motive … (his) intentions were surely not anti-national and he must have got the message.”

On the ruckus created in Punjab assembly by some opposition Shiromani Akali Dal MLAs over Sidhu’s remarks, the chief minister said, “Such unconstitutional behaviour is not only unbecoming of a party of national stature but actually exposed their anti-people mindset. They neither care for the traditions of the house nor are concerned about the welfare of the people.”

After the uproar following Sidhu’s remarks, the ex-cricketer justified his take on India-Pakistan dialogue and said, “This (attack) should be condemned by all. For a handful people, you cannot blame an entire nation. Those behind the attack must be punished.” He said his statement was taken out of context and “deliberately distorted” as the “people were scared of him”.

Earlier, Amarinder Singh directly blamed Pakistan for the suicide attack on the CRPF personnel and called for a befitting reply to the country, which is home to several terrorist groups, including the Jaish-e-Muhammed, which carried out the Pulwama carnage.
