BK Hariprasad, a senior Congress leader, on Thursday, BJP president Amit Shah had contracted swine flu after “trying to topple the Congress-Janata Dal (Secular) government” in Karnataka.

Speaking at a public meeting in Bengaluru, Hariprasad, who is also a Congress Rajya Sabha member, said, “They (BJP) have kidnapped Congress MLAs and kept them in Mumbai. They are under the guard of RSS and BJP workers. Since some MLAs have come back, Amit Shah has developed fever out of fear. It is not an ordinary fever, but swine flu … If you try to destabilize the Karnataka government, then you will get not just swine flu but also dysentery and diarrhoea.”

The BJP president has been admitted to Delhi’s All India Institute of Medical Sciences, since Wednesday, for treatment of swine flu.

Following the Congress MP’s remarks, senior BJP leaders hit back saying swine flu is curable but the Congress leader’s “mental illness” isn’t. They also demanded that Hariprasad be sacked from the Congress and demanded a public apology from the party.

Union minister Piyush Goyal tweeted in Hindi, “The kind of ugly and indecent comments Congress MP BK Hariprasad has made about BJP president Amit Shah’s health shows the standards of the Congress. Flu is curable, but it is difficult to cure Congress leaders’ mental illness.”

Information and broadcasting minister Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore also assailed Hariprasad, in a tweet, and accused the Congress leaders of “abandoning decency”:

Senior BJP leader Kailash Vijayvargia called Hariprasad's remarks “inhumane”.
