Congress’s Anand Sharma said, that Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel’s 1948 order banning the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh should be placed at a foot of the huge Sardar Patel statue, named as the “Statue of Unity”. The statue will soon be inaugurated in Gujarat’s Narmada district.

Talking to reporters in Pune, on Monday, he further noted that this move is going to tell people more about what the home minister of this country thought about “them” (RSS).

“RSS and BJP don’t have any heroes of own, so they are trying to make Patel’s Statue of Unity and that also is made in China,” the senior Congress member said without directly taking the name of the RSS.

“There’s the written order in 1948 by Patel about banning … following Mahatma Gandhi’s assassination ... same order must be placed on base of this statue so that our country knows Patel’s thoughts on them,” he said.

Patel, who was the deputy prime minister in February 1948, order a ban on the RSS following the assassination of Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi. The ban was later lifted in July 1949.
