The US president, Donald Trump, took a U-turn, on Tuesday, after threatening “retaliation” on India if New Delhi didn’t lift a hold on the export of antimalarial drug hydroxycholoroquine (HCQ), on Monday. Despite not conclusively proven effective against treating coronavirus infection, Trump touted the drug as a “game changer” following some reports that it works on COVID-19 patients.

In a telephonic interview with Fox News’s Sean Hannity, Trump said, ““I bought millions of (HCQ) doses. More than 29 million. I spoke to PM (Narendra) Modi, a lot of it comes out of India. I asked him if he would release it? He was Great. He was really good. You know they put a stop because they wanted it for India. But there is a lot of good things coming from that.”

On Tuesday, India said it would allow shipments of the drug to countries that are badly affected by the coronavirus pandemic. However, New Delhi also said shipment of the export of key drugs shouldn’t be politicized after Trump made the “retaliation” remark, on Monday.
