Congress MP from Assam’s Koliabor Gaurav Gogoi said the Bharatiya Janata Party is using the controversial Citizenship (Amendment) Bill as a political weapon. Gogoi, who is the son of former chief minister Tarun Gogoi, said his party will continue to oppose it.

Talking to reporters, on Sunday, Gogoi said, “We have already been very clear about Citizenship (Amendment) Bill issue. (Congress chief) Rahul Gandhi had clearly said that if Congress forms a government then we will remove this bill. Although we are not in government, we will still oppose it. This bill is against the constitution of India.”

He further said, “For the BJP, this bill is like a political weapon to divide the country … They did not think about Assam … its growing population.”

Gogoi also blamed the Narendra Modi government for not being serious enough about the National Register of Citizens. He said, “This government is not serious regarding NRC. The Supreme Court is repeatedly making statements, but the government is not doing anything. We want that a full and final and accurate NRC must happen at the earliest … all those Indians who are not part of it must be included in it.”

The Citizenship (Amendment) bill faced opposition from across the northeast.
