Gujarat education minister Bhupendrasinh Chudasama sparked a row after writing to rape convict Asaram’s asharam for observing February 14 as “Matru-Pitru Diwas (Mother-Father Day)”. The BJP minister praised the ashram, which had been embroiled in controversy in the past, for its “great work in producing better citizens”.

In his letter to the ashram, Chudasama wrote: “Great work in making young boys and girls and unmarried men and women better citizens.”

He added: “Those who serve their parents and teachers become respectable figures in the society. Your initiative of observing this day is appreciable. Hope that this campaign becomes successful and the students understand their duties towards parents in becoming best citizens. My best wishes for the campaign.”

Meanwhile, the Congress termed the letter as “unfortunate”, and accused the party for garnering support from the people who are still influenced by Asaram.

On the other hand, Chudasama defended his decision to write the letter, he said, “All I have done is sent a message with best wishes. I have nothing to do with the controversy (surrounding Asaram and his ashram).”
