The “purification ceremony” conducted by the head priest (tantri) of Sabarimala temple, Kandararu Rajeevaru, after two women of menstrual age had entered the shrine last week has invited flak from many sections of the society. Kerala public works department (PWD) minister and senior CPM leader G Sudhakaran, on Saturday, has lashed out at the tantri while calling him a ‘brahman monster’.

Using strong words, Sudhakaran said, “The tantri is a symbol of caste devil. He is not a brahman. He is a brahman monster. If a brahman becomes a monster, he will be a terror.”

Assailing the tantri further, the minister said, “He is not a ‘shuddha (pure) Brahmin’. He does not have any love, respect and allegiance towards Lord Ayyappa.”

The Supreme Court, in a landmark ruling last year, allowed women of all the ages to enter the Sabarimala shrine which was earlier banned for women of menstrual age to enter the temple. Two women, Kanakadurga, aged 44 and Bindu, aged 42, entered the shrine on Wednesday with police protection. This triggered violent protest in many parts of Kerala.
