Darbhanga MP Kirti Azad claimed that Congress workers used to loot polling booths before electronic voting machines were introduced. Azad, who is the son of former Bihar chief minister and Congress stalwart Baghwat Jha Azad, quit the Bharatiya Janata Party and joined the Congress recently.

Kirti Azad said, “Congress workers used to loot polling booths for Nagendra ji. They did the same for my father and me as well in 1999 as the EVM was not introduced then.” Nagendra Jha is the father of Bihar Congress president Madan Mohan Jha, who was a minister in the Bihar government when Bhagwat Jha Azad was the chief minister.

Later, talking to media, Kirti Azad confirmed that he made the statement but added that the context of his statement was different. He said, “It was a welcome ceremony and I was asked to share my experience after joining Congress. I own what I said. My only defence is that I said it wrongly and spoke in the heat of the moment. I was only talking about how Congress indulge in election -management and lure voters.”

The ruling NDA cornered congress with Kirti’s statement and said that it is in Congress culture to capture polling booth.
