Mamata Banerjee.

West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee, on Tuesday, warned the state assembly about the drying Atrai river and said the is drying up because of a dam’s construction in Bangladesh. She also blamed the Centre for not the issue seriously with Dhaka.

Responding to a question from the opposition, Banerjee said, “Because of the dam, people of South Dinajpur district are suffering. Everything from the state has been sent to the Centre but the Centre is watching the matter and taking it lightly.”

She further informed the state assembly that she has spoken to Bangladesh prime minister Sheikh Hasina as well as Prime Minister Narendra Modi on this issue.

The Atrai river flows from Siliguri into Bangladesh before flowing back into South Dinajpur district of West Bengal. In the 18th century, it was one of the greatest rivers of north Bengal as it was the main channel by which the waters of the Teesta discharged into the Ganga. In 1787, however, the Teesta broke away from its ancient bed and cut for itself a new and capacious channel, through which it found its way into the Brahmaputra. Since then the Atrai has lost its importance and has now few traces of its former greatness.
