Statues of Mayawati (L), BR Ambedkar (C) and Kansi Ram at Rashtriya Dalit Prerna Sthal in Noida.

Bahujan Samaj Party chief and former Uttar Pradesh chief minister Mayawati, on Tuesday, justified her life-size statues built in Uttar Pradesh with crores of rupees of public money when she was CM and told the Supreme Court that they represent the “will of the people”, after chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi had said that Mayawati has to reimburse the taxpayer all the money used in the statues.

Mayawati said, “Proper budgetary allocation was made for the statues when I was the chief minister of UP,” and added the memorials were created for people to draw inspiration from them.

She also said, “Why question only dalit leaders’ statues and not the ones erected by the Congress and the BJP using public money.”
