Mayawati says BJP must apologize to dalits for criticizing statues of their icons

Mayawati, the leader of Bahujan Samaj Party, demanded an apology from the BJP and the RSS for criticizing her for building parks and memorials in commemoration of dalit icons when she was the chief minister of UP.

Mayawati raised the issue in the wake of Prime Minister Narendra Modi unveiling the Statue of Unity to, billed to be the tallest in the world to pay tribute to Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, the first home minister of the country.

She said the Rs 3,000 crore statue was built by the BJP-led NDA government, while the same BJP had derided her move to build statues and memorials of dalit icons by calling it “extravagance”.
