Mayawati.

Bahujan Samaj Party chief Mayawati, on Tuesday, launched a scathing attack on Congress president Rahul Gandhi by criticizing his promise of “minimum income” guarantee scheme. She slammed Gandhi and said that his promises are as fake and ineffective as his grandmother Indira Gandhi’s famous 1971 “garibi hatao” slogan.

Asking if it was a “cruel joke or a promise”, Mayawati asked the Congress president to give proof of his intent.

She said, “Before making such promises, Rahul should implement welfare schemes in Congress-ruled states of Rajasthan, Punjab, Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh, so that people don’t pass off such promises as fake.”

The Congress has been kept out of the alliance between Mayawati’s BSP and Akhilesh Yadav’s Samajwadi Party in Uttar Pradesh for this year’s Lok Sabha election. On the other hand, the Congress has appointed Priyanka Gandhi as a party general secretary and given the charge of eastern UP and decided to contest on all 80 seats in the state. Also, the three parties have expressed their wish to work together with the common goal of defeating the BJP.
