The Congress accused the Narendra Modi government of having used “barbaric force” against farmers in Delhi. The party said that the police actions on the protesting farmers had unveiled the Modi government’s real face and has exposed the Centre’s U-turn on every promise they made to the community in the election.

Calling the BJP’s “barbaric” action on farmers “ironical” on the birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi and Lal Bhahadur Shastri, who gave the slogan of “Jai jawan, Jai kisan”, Congress president Rahul Gandhi on October 2  tweeted the following:

Congress spokesman Randeep Singh Surjewala criticized PM Modi and said “arrogance has gone to his head.” He said, “If the Centre could write off huge debt of a few industrialists, why it could not waive the loans of farmers.”

Joining the Congress’s criticism against the Modi government, CPM general secretary Sitaram Yechury said, “We condemn the police action. It is an expression of BJP’s insensitivity towards farmers. The Centre has betrayed all the promises it had made to the farming community.”

In fact, BSP chief Mayawati too stated, “This is the height of the BJP government's anarchy and it should remain prepared to bear its consequences.”

Former UP CM and present Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav joined the criticism against the Modi government and said, “On the birth anniversaries of the propagator of peace Mahatma Gandhi and Lal Bahadur Shastri, who gave the slogan “jai jawan jai kisan”, the police lathicharge on protesting farmers has exposed the BJP. People of the country are angry over the demeaning behaviour of BJP towards farmers.”

Jayant Chaudhary, Rashtriya Lok Dal leader, said, “Farmers are restive because they are neither getting payment for sugarcane nor reasonable price for their crops. The PM crop insurance scheme and other schemes for farmers are either impractical or mired in corruption. The situation has forced farmers to protest.”

Accusing the government of discarding the Swaminathan Committee report, RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav claimed that the Modi government had stabbed farmers in the back. Tejashwi tweeted:
