Narendra Modi.

“Chowkidar chor hai (watchman is thief).” First, opposition Congress president Rahul Gandhi raised the slogan targeting the prime minister, Narendra Modi, over alleged irregularities over the Rafale deal. Now, “ally” Shiv Sena chief Uddhav Thackeray parroted the line while attacking the prime minister.

This was too much for Modi not to react.

Addressing a rally in Dharamshala marking the first anniversary of the Jai Ram Thakur-led BJP government in Himachal Pradesh, Modi, on Thursday, said: “Unko chowkidar se dar lagne laga hain. Choron ki neend haram ho gayi hain ke chowkidar sone ko tayyar nahi hai, chowkidar choron ko chhodne ke liye tayyar nahi hai. Isliye pareshaani hai (They have started to fear the watchman. The thieves have lost their sleep because the watchman is not ready to sleep, the watchman is not ready to spare the thieves. That’s why they are troubled).”

During his 2014 Lok Sabha election campaign, Modi had said he would be like a chowkidar (watchman) who won’t allow anyone to rob the state exchequer.
