Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s interview with Hindi news channel News Nation is trending after some remarks Modi made during an interview. He was first mocked and criticized for his claims that heavy cloud help “prevent” detection of Indian Air Force warplanes.

Later, another clip from the same interview went viral in which Modi, while responding a question on how he became a “gadget lover”, said his interest in technology started long before he became chief minister of Gujarat. Modi claimed that he “started using the (Stylus) pen (used on touchscreen devices) in the 1990s”.

He then said, “Perhaps … I don't know if there were others … I first used a digital camera around 1987-88 and emailed a photo of (Lal Krishna) Advani ji …”

It is unclear whether Modi meant to say he was first person to ever use a digital camera in India.

It may be noted that while the first digital camera was introduced as a commercial project in 1975, Japanese company Nikon introduced the first digital single-lens reflex camera in 1986. Internet for the public was launched on August 15, 1995 in India despite it began with the launch of the Educational Research Network in 1986. Email was limited to academics and very few government agencies even in the west during that time.
