Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, on Wednesday, assured that the party is not trying cut into votes of the Samajwadi Party-Bahujan Samaj Party-Rashtriya Janata Dal alliance in Uttar Pradesh, but into BJP votes. This has evoked sharp reactions from the BJP.

Priyanka, talking to the media, said, “We have carefully chosen candidates so that either Congress wins or they cut into BJP’s votes. Congress is not at all cutting into votes of the ‘UP gathbandhan’.”

Reacting to this, Bharatiya Janata Party spokesman Sambit patra said, “Congress has already lost. Congress is not contesting to win.” On the other hand, senior BJP leader and Union finance minister Arun Jaitley said the Congress was a “fringe” outfit now. Speaking during a news conference, on Thursday, Jaitley said, “The grand old party of Indian politics is now a fringe organization, not just in size ... From electoral-strategy point of view to what Priyanka said yesterday ... is biodata for being on the fringes.”
