Political leaders across the country including Congress president Rahul Gandhi, on Saturday, paid homage to the victims of the Jallianwala Bagh massacre on its 100th anniversary. Gandhi paid floral tributes to the martyrs along with Punjab chief minister Amarinder Singh.

Rahul Gandhi said, “Today is the centenary of the brutal Jallianwalla Bagh massacre, a day of infamy that stunned the entire world and changed the course of the Indian freedom struggle. The cost of our freedom must never be forgotten.”

The Jallianwala Bagh massacre, also known as the Amritsar massacre, took place on April 13, 1919 when troops of the British Indian Army under Colonel Reginald Dyer command fired into a crowd who gathered there for a peaceful protest to condemn the arrest and deportation of two national leaders, Satya Pal and Saifuddin Kitchlew.

Although the exact number of casualties are not known, it is estimated that 379–1,600 people died in the firing, which included the old, women and children.
