During the debate for the 124th Constitutional Amendment Bill to enable 10 per cent reservation for the “economically weaker section” from the general category in education and employment, law minister Ravi Shankar Prasad compared the bill with “a hit for six in the slog overs” in cricket, when the opposition raised the question about its timing.

The opposition alleged that the government brought the bill with an eye on the Lok Sabha election, scheduled to be held between April and May this year.

Prasad said the timing of the bill was like a hit for a six in the slog overs in a cricket game.

Prasad said, “This is a six in the slog overs when the (innings in a) match is drawing to a close. If you (the opposition) have trouble with it, then this is not the first six, and there will be many more sixes.”

He further said that such sixes (big decisions) would come for development and change. People will decide to defeat and win. We believe that the (BJP-led) NDA will get an overwhelming majority in the (Lok Sabha) election.

The Rajya Sabha passed the bill with a majority of 165 against seven, on late Wednesday night. The Lok Sabha passed the bill on Tuesday.
