The Congress president, Rahul Gandhi, said he was ready to become the prime minister if his party’s allies want him to lead the nation. He said this while replying to a question during an interactive session at the “Hindustan Times Leadership Summit” in New Delhi, on Friday.

When asked about if he was willing to be India’s next prime minister if the Congress party wins the 2019 Lok Sabha election, Gandhi said, “If allies want me, sure.”

Mentioning Mayawati’s decision of maintaining no alliance with Congress for the assembly election in Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan, Gandhi said, “Mayawati’s move will not impact the party’s prospects in the states. However, I don’t see the BSP alliance impacting us much in Madhya Pradesh.”

He further said, “The alliance in the states and in the Centre are very different … Mayawati ji has indicated that. We were pretty flexible in the states; in fact, I was more flexible than some of our state leaders.”

Setting aside Mayawati’s decision of going solo for the assembly elections this year, Gandhi said, “I think in the Lok Sabha election, the opposition parties will come together to form an alliance, particularly in Uttar Pradesh.”

According to media reports, Gandhi predicted that Prime Minister Narendra Modi would not be re-elected as prime minister in the 2019 general election.
