Smriti Irani hits back at Shashi Tharoor on his Kumbh tweet

The Bharatiya Janata Party, on Wednesday, accused Congress MP Shashi Tharoor of insulting Hinduism by “ridiculing” the ongoing Kumbh Mela with “tacit support” of Rahul Gandhi. Targeting the Yogi Adityanath-led Uttar Pradesh cabinet’s dip in the Kumbh, Tharoor, on Monday, tweeted: “Ganga has to be kept clean and sins are also to be washed here. Everyone is naked in this Sangam. Hail mother Ganga.”

BJP Union minister Smriti Irani said the Kumbh was a festival of faith and a biggest symbol of Hindu beliefs. She said Tharoor’s tweet is “religious slur”.
Claiming the Congress president’s silence amounted to his support to Tharoor’s “insult” of the Hinduism. She said, “It is appalling, and he has done it with tacit support of Rahul Gandhi.”
She said Tharoor has often made comments targeting Hinduism. Hitting out at Gandhi further, Irani claimed that he allows his party leaders to attack the beliefs of Hindus but strategically wears “janeu” (holy thread) during the time of elections.
