Tejashwi Yadav.

Tejashwi Yadav, former Bihar deputy chief minister and son of Rashtriya Janata Dal’s Lalu Prasad, on Sunday, said, the Congress is “best equipped” to lead the opposition’s charge against the Bharatiya Janata Party in the upcoming Lok Sabha election and that the grand old party has to handle its leadership role with “magnanimity” and accommodate regional parties.

Yadav also spoke about the Samajwadi Party-Bahujan Samaj Party alliance in Uttar Pradesh and emphasized that his “courtesy” meetings with Akhilesh Yadav and Mayawati post the tie-up should not be construed as a “pressure tactic” aimed at the Congress.

In an interview with news agency PTI, Yadav said Congress is India’s oldest and currently the second-biggest political party having a pan-India presence, and it is in a very strong position to win. And that Congress play a key role in forming alliance. However, they also must accept that each state has different ground realities.

He further added that the party is “undoubtedly best equipped” to lead against the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance government. However, he said, “The Congress will have to handle their leadership role with magnanimity and play a proactive role by accommodating regional parties with their agenda.”
