While addressing a news conference at the Press Club in Nagpur, former senior BJP leader Yashwant Sinha, on Wednesday, claimed that Narendra Modi-led government’s action of removal of CBI head Alok Verma was linked to Rafale jet deal as Verma had “received a complaint” by Sinha onto the controversy of Rafale deal.

Sinha said, “I, along with Shourie and Bhushan, had given a complaint to the CBI with several annexures regarding the details about the Rafale deal. The CBI director, Alok Verma had received the complaint personally, which is why the government had removed him from the position as it feared that it could have damming evidence against the government in those papers and there was a strong possibility of a FIR being lodged in the case.”

Sinha further claimed, “With this, the government had completely destroyed the most relied upon government institution reducing India to the level of a banana republic.”

Sinha termed the government’s action as completely “illegal” and said, “CBI director can’t be removed by the government before completing his term of two years, something mandated by an act of Parliament.”

Sinha claimed, “The fate of the director has to be decided by the three-member committee comprising the prime minister, the chief justice of India and the leader of the largest opposition, which also selects him for the post. And in any case, he can’t be forced to go on leave as has happened in this case.”
