New Delhi: Two days after Bharatiya Janata Party’s Smriti Irani pulled off the biggest upset in Lok Sabha election by beating Congress president Rahul Gandhi in Amethi, her close associate from the constituency, Surendra Singh, was shot dead at his residence in Baraulia village, on late Saturday night.

According to the police, four gunmen stormed the house of the 58-year-old village headman and pumped bullets into him. He was rushed to a hospital in Lucknow where was declared dead.

Following this, police launched a massive manhunt and arrested three suspects and detained two others in Amethi’s three tehsils – Gauriganj, Jais and Tiloi.

Meanwhile, Irani rushed to Amethi from Delhi and played the role of a pallbearer during Singh’s funeral procession.

On the murder, Irani said, “I will seek death penalty for the killers of Surendra ji in whichever court of justice. He was a loyal member of our party. In this moment of mourning, I have come to stand in solidarity with the family.”
