Aparna Sen.

New Delhi: Taking note of the growing incidences of religious hate crimes and mob lynchings in the country, 49 eminent intellectuals, including renowned film directors and actors have expressed deep concern in a letter written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Among those who signed the letter include filmmakers and actors Anurag Kashyap, Aparna Sen, Konkona Sen Sharma and Soumita Chatterjee. In their letter, they said the “Jai Shree Ram” religious chant has become a war cry today.

Among the other celebrities and activists who signed the letter are: Dr Binayak Sen, Revathy, Shyam Benegal, Shubha Mudgal, Rupam Islam, Anupam Roy, Parambrata, Riddhi Sen, Ramchandra Guha, doctor and Ashis Nandy. They urged the prime minister to act strongly against those who are lynching people on religious grounds as mere criticism of such acts wasn’t enough.

The letter reads: “The lynching of Muslims, dalits and other minorities must be stopped immediately. We were shocked to learn from the NCRB that there have been no less than 840 instances of atrocities against dalits in the year 2016, and a definite decline in the percentage of convictions.” It further reads: “Regrettably, ‘Jai Shri Ram’ has become a provocative ‘war cry’ today that leads to law and order problems, and many lynchings take place in its name … There is no democracy without dissent. People should not be branded anti-national or ‘urban Naxal’ and incarcerated because of dissent against the government.”
