New Delhi: The Congress, on Friday, filed a memorandum with the Election Commission of India seeking an “urgent and necessary intervention” against “deliberate, corrupt and wilful falsification of facts” by Union minister Smriti Irani regarding her educational records. Smriti Irani is the Bharatiya Janata Party candidate from Amethi Lok Sabha constituency and is pitted against Congress president Rahul Gandhi.

The party also claimed that Irani had gone against Section 125A read with Section 33 of Representation of the People Act, 1950, “besides other offences under Indian Penal Code,” by submitting “contradictory affidavits to ECI”

In response to Congress’s attack, Irani said, “I have a message for them (Congress) … as much as you try, I will work for Amethi against the party. No matter what you say, the more you harass me, the harder I’ll work.”

On Friday, the Congress held a news conference and raised the issue, while mocking Irani.
