Coronavirus pandemic: India COVID-19 cases cross 10,000, over 350 dead
New Delhi: The number of people infected by the new coronavirus, COVID-19, in India has crossed 10,000, on Monday. The death toll too increased sharply and crossed 350 with 51 deaths reported during the same day. This is India’s highest number of deaths from the disease in a single day.
In Italy, where the pandemic has caused severe damage, the death toll crossed 20,000 on Monday. While the United States leads the world in the number of infections and deaths, the number of deaths in New York alone has crossed 10,000.
On Monday, an Indian Council of Medical Research official said 206,213 tests were carried out until Sunday. He also said 14 mentor institutes have been identified which will look at the feasibility of more labs doing the testing for COVID-19 infections.
Meanwhile, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will address the nation at 10am on Tuesday. He is likely to spell out the Centre’s decision on whether to extend the nationwide lockdown and how it will be implemented. It is almost certain that the lockdown will be extended as chief ministers of several states have requested the Centre to do so. However, with the need to keep the economy ticking, the Centre may announce the resumption of some business activity and slightly relax the complete ban on travel for the citizens.
