New Delhi: In what is being described as a “big diplomatic win” for India, China, on Wednesday, finally relented to put Jaish-e-Muhammed chief Masood Azhar in the United Nation’s list of global terrorists. China, which had blocked moves to blacklist Masood Azhar four times, finally dropped its objections saying it “found no objection after a careful study of revised materials.”

International pressure, and the low tolerance for terrorism made China change its stand, among other reasons.

International pressure included the United States, along with France and the United Kingdom to turn the heat on China in the United Nations security council, threatening to discuss Azhar in a forum that would isolate Beijing publicly and force it to state the reasons for opposing the ban.

Another reason would be the lack of criticism of the retaliatory air strikes by India on terrorist camp in Pakistan’s Balakot following the Pulwama terror attack indicated that the tolerance for global terrorism is low.

However, China said that it agreed to allow the UNSC to declare as a “global terrorist” only after it was satisfied with the “revised evidence” made available to it. It was referring to the exhaustive report showing Azhar as a terrorist which was provided by foreign secretary Vijay Gokhale during his recent visit to Beijing between April 25 and 27.

The UN decision means a freeze on Masood Azhar’s finances and assets, a travel ban and an arms embargo.
