New Delhi: Five jawans of the Central Reserve Police Force were killed in action when terrorists attacked their convoy in Jammu & Kashmir’s Anantnag, on Wednesday evening. According to latest reports, one terrorist was also gunned down during the gunbattle between the terrorists and the paramilitary personnel that ensued following the attack.

The station house officer of Anantnag police station has also been injured in the attack. All the injured have been moved to Srinagar for treatment.

Officials said that two militants started firing indiscriminately from automatic rifles on a CRPF convoy on the busy KP Road in the town and then threw a grenade. The encounter is still on in a busy area. Due to the presence of a bus stand at the site, there were a lot of people when the incident happened.

The officials also said since the security forces stationed in that area dominate the place, they have been targeted.

According to TV reports, a jihadist group called al-Umar Mujahideen claimed responsibility for the attack. The terrorist organization is believed to be headed by one Mushtaq Jarar, who was also a target of the Indian Air Force raid in Pakistan’s Balakot.

This terror attack in Anantnag has been carried out just weeks before the Amarnath Yatra is scheduled to begin. Amarnath Yatra will commence from July 1 and end on August 15, on the day of Shravan Purnima. Meanwhile, security and other preparations for an incident-free Amarnath Yatra are being finalized. The Jammu & Kashmir governor, Satyapal Malik, recently briefed the Union home minister, Amit Shah, about this.

Terrorists have been frustrated with the “Operation All Out”, currently carried out by the Army and other security forces. In recent days, a large number of terrorists have been killed in encounters with security forces. This attack is seen in the light of this.
