New Delhi: A mob, armed with rods and sticks, attacked four men in Jhurmo village, Jharkhand, minutes after a villager’s ox died. The attackers alleged that the villagers had slaughtered the ox. Most villagers managed to flee during the attack, but one was killed and three others were injured in the assault.

However, the Jharkhand Police, on Friday, registered a case against the three men injured in the attack under the state’s cow-slaughter laws, after two days of the mob violence. Two of the seven men charged with the villager’s murder have also been arrested.

Dr Roshan Khalkho, at the Gumla Community Health Centre, alleged that the police tried to “coerce” him to violate the procedure by making an entry of the dead villager to indicate that he died during the treatment.

One of the villagers said, “Suddenly, a few people came and started beating us mercilessly with rods and whatever they could carry and we did not know the reason behind it. People chanted slogans and we ran for our lives. The four could not escape.”
