New Delhi: A day after Sadhvi Pragya Singh Thakur, an accused in the 2008 Malegaon blasts case and the Bharatiya Janata Party Lok Sabha candidate from Bhopal constituency, said Hemant Karkare, the 26/11 martyr, died because of her curse, the association of Indian Police Service officers condemned the statement.

The IPS association, in a tweet said: “Ashok Chakra awardee late Sri Hemant Karkare, IPS made the supreme sacrifice fighting terrorists. Those of us in uniform condemn the insulting statement made by a candidate and demand that sacrifices of all our martyrs be respected.”

Although, Thakur’s political opponent and Bhopal’s Congress candidate Digvijaya Singh said he did not like commenting on his opponents’ statements and added, “Hemant Karkare was an honest and dutiful officer who laid down his life for the country. We all should feel proud of his martyrdom and no one should comment on him.”

But Congress’s spokesman Randeep Surjewala, while referring to Thakur’s remarks, said Thakur being a favourite of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, revealed the true “anti-national” face of the BJP.

However, the chief electoral officer of Madhya Pradesh said a complaint had been received against Thakur for her comments and the matter was being looked into, while Thakur, after striking controversies for her statement, said, “I don’t offer my replies, they are given by Thakurji (Lord Ram).”
