New Delhi: India has received 32.8 per cent less rain than expected in June, the first month of the south monsoon season. Experts have attributed this to the adverse effects of the Cyclone Vayu.

Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Kerala and parts of the northeast have been reported as the driest states, whereas north Karnataka, Konkan and Goa, Gujarat, east Rajasthan and Jammu & Kashmir have recorded normal rainfall in June.

According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), good rainfall is expected in the months of July and August as a result of advancement of monsoon in the remaining parts of central, western and northern India by the end of first week of July.

IMD officials, while assuring the favourable conditions for monsoon for progression further northward, said that El Nino, the abnormal warming of the equatorial Pacific Ocean, may have played some role in slowing down the progress of monsoon after the onset.

Monsoon would reach Delhi around July 4-5. On Monday, the “Northern Limit of Monsoon” (NLM) passed through Dwarka, Ahmedabad, Bhopal, Jabalpur, Pendra, Sultanpur, Lakhimpur Kheri and Mukteshwar, the officials said.

Meanwhile, monsoon has wreaked havoc in some parts of the country. Mumbai received around 540mm rainfall in 24 hours resulting in waterlogging at several places in the city. Nineteen people have been killed and several people injured after a compound wall in Kurar village, Pimparipada-Malad East collapsed on hutments, on Monday night, due to heavy rainfall. Several flights and trains have been cancelled affecting thousands of commuters.

The Meteorological Department had warned of “extremely heavy” rainfall in coming four-five days. Pune IMD official Anupam Kashyapi, while talking to reporters, said, “In coming 4-5 days monsoon will be vigorous in Maharashtra, especially northern parts of the state, it will also be active in the southern parts of the state. Konkan Goa will get widespread rain during these 5 days.”

The Maharashtra government has declared a public holiday on July 2 as a precautionary measure considering the heavy rainfall prediction.
