New Delhi: The railways came under scrutiny yet again for alleged violation of the election model code of conduct when passengers Kathgodam Shatabdi, on Friday, reported that tea was served in paper cups with “main bhi chowkidar” written on them. The “Main bhi Chowkidar” is a Bharatiya Janata Party campaign in support of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who came under attack from the opposition for alleged corruption in the Rafale warplane deal.

The model code of conduct is enforced since the announcement of the Lok Sabha election dates.

As the image of the paper cup tweeted by a passenger went viral, the railways withdrew the cup and penalized the contractor. However, the advertisement on the cup was by an NGO called Sankalp Foundation.

An Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation spokesperson while clarifying that there wasn’t any prior approval from IRCTC, said, “A fine of Rs 1 lakh has been imposed on the service provider. A show-cause notice has also been served to the service provider for this misconduct.”
