New Delhi: Asbab, who witnessed the killing of his two brothers during the communal clashes in Muzaffarnagar and its adjoining areas, in August and September 2013, was shot dead in Khatoli, on Monday. The victim was delivering milk to a shop when two bike-borne armed men shot him multiple times. The murder took place close to the Khatauli police station, in Muzaffarnagar.

The Muzaffarnagar riots had claimed more than 60 lives while over 40,000 people were displaced.

Eight people are facing trial for allegedly killing Asbab’s brothers and the next hearing was scheduled for March 25.

Kumar said the police is examining the CCTV footages to identify the shooter as Asbab was killed when he was going to deliver milk. Earlier he had been threatened with dire consequences if he did not withdraw his case, for which he had also sought police protection following the threats.

The Muzaffarnagar senior superintendent of police, Sudhir Kumar Singh, while speaking to reporters, said, “We received information of a shooting near Agarwal Dairy in Khatauli, where Asbab had come to deliver milk. He lived a couple of kilometres away in Islamnagar with his family.”

An FIR under Section 302 (murder) has been registered against unknown persons.
