Naval officer dies after fire breaks out on INS Vikramaditya

New Delhi: A naval officer died, on Saturday, after a fire broke out onboard on the INS Vikramaditya, India's only aircraft carrier, while entering the harbour in Karnataka's Karwar.

After the incident took place the Navy released an official statement saying, “Lieutenant Commander DS Chauhan bravely led the firefighting efforts in the affected compartment.”

The Navy described the event further saying, while the fire was brought under control, the officer lost consciousness due to the smoke and fumes during the firefighting efforts. He was immediately evacuated to the Naval Hospital at Karwar but could not be revived.

The Navy added that the fire was brought under control by the ship's crew “in a swift action preventing any serious damage affecting the ship's combat capability.”

A Board has been ordered already to look into the inquiry of the investigation of the fire incident.

 The young officer, who lost his life in the incident, was in his thirties and had gotten married just last month. He is survived by his mother and wife.
