New Delhi: Ahead of this year’s Lok Sabha election, the Congress president, Rahul Gandhi, on Monday, has come up with a populist scheme that directly challenges Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s purported direct cash-transfer scheme. Gandhi promised a scheme that guarantees a “minimum income” for the poor if the Congress party comes into the power.

While addressing a rally in Raipur, Gandhi said, “The Congress party has made up its mind to bring a minimum income guarantee scheme. If our government comes (to power) in 2019, every poor will get a minimum amount in their bank account. This is a historic decision; no government in the world has so far done it.”

Later, he tweeted: “We cannot build a new India while millions of our brothers & sisters suffer the scourge of poverty. If voted to power in 2019, the Congress is committed to a Minimum Income Guarantee for every poor person, to help eradicate poverty & hunger. This is our vision & our promise.”

The central government is supposed to unravel a scheme in few days that guarantees direct cash transfer in the account of poor. However, according to the reports, there is no clarity yet on the details of the scheme as Modi government is said to be working on various schemes.

Gandhi too has not revealed the details of the scheme he promised. His party has promised that the scheme will be included in the party manifesto.
