New Delhi: Sonia Gandhi, the chairperson of United Progressive Alliance and former Congress chief, has been re-elected as the leader of the Congress Parliamentary Party. This decision comes following a meeting of the party MPs at the Central Hall of Parliament. Sonia will now pick leader for the Lower House of Parliament.

Gandhi is the sole Congress MP elected from Uttar Pradesh. She represents the Rae Bareli Lok Sabha constituency.

A meeting was hold in which all 52 newly elected Lok Sabha MPs of Congress attended. It is worth noting that in this Lok Sabha poll, the Congress’s performance was better than 2014 Lok Sabha poll, yet Congress has three members short to claim the post of the leader of the opposition. According to constitutional provisions, for getting the post of leader of opposition a party should have 10 per cent (55) seat of the total number of Lok Sabha members.

Senior Congress leader and spokesman Randeep Singh Surjewala took to Twitter and wrote: “Sonia Gandhi elected as the leader of Congress Parliamentary Party! She says, ‘we thank the 12.13 crore voters for reposing faith in the Congress Party.”

Congress chief Rahul Gandhi also congratulated her mother on Twitter and said: “Congratulations to Smt Sonia Gandhi on being elected Leader of the Congress Parliamentary Party. Under her leadership, the Congress will prove to be a strong and effective opposition party, that will fight to defend the Constitution of India.”

After the Lok Sabha result, this was the first official meeting that was attended by Rahul after the May 25 meeting of the Congress Working Committee. Surjewala said: “Rahul Gandhi thanked the voters and Congress workers. He says, ‘every Congress member must remember that each one of you is fighting for the Constitution, for every person in India irrespective of the colour of his skin or belief.”
