The Supreme Court of India.

New Delhi: A day after Subedar Mohammad Sanaullah (retired), who served the Indian Army for 30 years, was declared a “foreigner” by an Assam foreigners’ tribunal, the Supreme Court, on Thursday, ordered the National Register of Citizens coordinator Prateek Hajela to ensure a fair hearing of those who were left out without any shortcuts and complete the same by end of July.

Media reported that Chief Justice of India Ranjan Gogoi sought the NRC official not to rush through the process in an attempt to meet the deadline of July 31. Earlier this month, the apex court had said foreigners who cannot be deported to their parent country should not be held in detention centres in Assam forever.

The top court’s observation came after Sanaullah was arrested and sent to a detention centre after one of the foreigners’ tribunals (Foreigners’ Tribunal Number 2) declared him as an undocumented foreigner living illegally in the state. There are around 100 such tribunals in the state.
