New Delhi: After Uttar Pradesh chief minister Yogi Adityanath referred to the Indian Union Muslim League as a “green virus”, Twitter has withheld his two controversial tweets while acting on Election Commission’s directive.

The two controversial tweets, which are not visible on Adityanath’s Twitter wall, are replaced by a message which reads: “This tweet from @myogiadityanath has been withheld in India in response to a legal demand.”

IUML is a long-time member of the Congress-led United Democratic Front in Kerala.

While targeting Congress after Rahul Gandhi decided to contest from Wayanad, Adityanath stepped up his attack on the party’s ally Indian Union Muslim League and accused it of “dividing” the country and being a “green virus”

Responding to Adityanath’s “hate comments”, the IUML had filed a complaint against the “virus” remark on April 6 after which the Election Commission gave directions to Twitter. It also urged poll panel to take punitive measures against Adityanath.

The IUML complaint also said, “The IUML was formed in Madras on March 10, 1948 after the tragic partition of India. The party is committed to the Constitution of India and the Constitutional principles of secularism, fraternity and the unity and integrity of the nation. The IUML has no role in the partition. This has been done intentionally for creating hatred among communities which is punishable under section 153A of the IPC.”

Also, while welcoming EC’s move on barring Adityanath from campaigning, an advocate from the IUML legal team said, “Social media should not be misused so as to bring hatred against communities. This should act as a stern warning for others.”

Apart from acting against Adityanath’s tweets, Twitter has taken down a few other “objectionable” tweets by other politicians and commentators, including Union minister Giriraj Singh, Shiromani Akali Dal MLA Manjinder Singh Sirsa, actor Koena Mitra, BJP IT cell head Amit Malviya, BJP youth-wing national president Harsh Sanghavi and former Army officer Surendra Poonia.

A total of 34 tweets from 31 handles have been withheld.
