New Delhi: The number of the novel coronavirus, Covid-19, cases in India crossed the 200,000-mark with a record spike of 8,863 cases in a single day, in the last 24 hours. On Wednesday afternoon, the total number of coronavirus cases was over 207,000 and the death toll more than 5,800.

This is the fourth consecutive day when India has recorded more than 8,000 cases in a single day.

India is now ranked seventh in the global list of nations with the most number of coronavirus cases after the United States, Brazil, Russia, Spain, United Kingdom, and Italy. However, India’s official mortality rate from Covid-19 has been lower than these countries.

In a news briefing, Lav Agarwal, joint secretary in the health ministry, said the nationwide lockdown helped in limiting the spread of the coronavirus and gave time to hospitals to deal with those affected. India’s fatality rate from the infection is 2.82 per cent against the global average of 6.13 per cent.

The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) said the number of Covid-19 infections in India will not peak until later this month or next month when the number of cases start to decline.
