Vaccine hopes brighten

As scientists around the world is scrambling to prepare a vaccine for the worst pandemic since the Spanish flu, nearly a century a century, reports with hope are coming out from pockets across the globe.

A team of scientists at Oxford is planning to begin tests on volunteers who will be intentionally exposed to the virus in – what is known as – a “challenge trial”. However, this move seen as controversial since there is no proven cure for the disease.

The Oxford vaccine has already been tested in a “Phase 1” trial involving about 1,000 British volunteers. The details of this trial is due to be published in the Lancet, on Monday. Tens of thousands of people are also being recruited in the UK, Brazil, South Africa and the US for a further testing of the vaccine.

Meanwhile, Chinese company Sinovac Biotech’s experimental vaccine is set to enter final stage of testing later in about two weeks from now.

Apart from this, the United States, India, and a range of other countries are either working individually or cooperating with each other in developing a vaccine at the earliest and some of the companies and organizations working towards it have expressed hope that a vaccine could be available in the market as early as August.
