Mumbai coronavirus cases cross 52,000; ‘Delhi likely to have 550,000 Covid-19 cases by July-end’

New Delhi: Even as the daytime lockdown is lifted in most of India, except in containment zones, Maharashtra is reeling under the novel coronavirus, Covid-19, pandemic. The number of cases in the state is inching towards the 1 lakh-mark now.

According to an official, Maharashtra reported 3,254 new coronavirus patients, on Wednesday, taking the total count of cases in the state to 94,041. He also said the state recorded 149 new deaths due to the infection. This took the total number of deaths in the state to 3,438.

In Mumbai alone, the number of cases stands at 52,667 with 1,857 deaths.

The Maharashtra chief minister, Uddhav Thackeray, said although the lockdown restrictions have been partially relaxed to allow restarting of business and other activities, the threat from the virus still persists. He also hinted the lockdown, which is in force until June 30, could be extended if people in the state fail to follow the guidelines.

‘Delhi may have 550,000 Covid-19 cases by July 31’

In the national capital, Delhi’s deputy chief minister, Manish Sisodia, said the megacity is likely to have 550,000 Covid-19 cases by July 31. His statement comes after a day after the lieutenant governor, Anil Baijal, revoked the Arvind Kejriwal-led Delhi government’s order to reserve beds in its hospitals for Delhi residents.

Sisodia had for that many Covid-19 patients, 80,000 beds would be needed. He also accused the LG of “not having any plan” to deal with the surge in the number of patients who would need hospitalization.

On Sunday, Delhi’s chief minister, Arvind Kejriwal, had said hospitals under the Delhi government and some private ones will be reserved for the people of Delhi until the number of coronavirus cases starts declining.

India Covid-19 cases continue to surge sharply

Meanwhile, coronavirus cases in India continue to rise sharply. On Wednesday, the total number of Covid-19 infections in the country crossed 287,000 with 12,375 fresh cases. The disease also took 388 lives on the day, raising the death toll in the country to over 8,100.

India now ranks sixth in the world in the number of Covid-19 infections after the United States, Brazil, Russia, United Kingdom, and Spain. In the list of the countries with the most number of deaths, India ranks 11th after the US, UK, Brazil, Italy, France, Spain, Mexico, Belgium, Germany, and Iran.
