New Delhi: Kanhaiya Kumar, the Communist Party of India Lok Sabha candidate from Bihar’s Begusarai constituency, has launched a crowdfunding campaign, on Tuesday, and asked people to donate ₹1 for his election-campaign fund.

Kumar, who was the former leader of Jawaharlal Nehru University, in his crowdfunding note, says, “Friends, you are all aware that in a bid to seek votes, people have hurt the democracy and have put the Constitution in danger. In these times, the battle to safeguard constitutional values has to be fought by the people of this country together. I hope that you all shall contribute financially so as to strengthen this struggle.”

Kanhaiya Kumar, who has been fielded against BJP’s Giriraj Singh, who is a Union minister, and Rashtriya Janata Dal’s Tanvir Hasan in Begusarai, plans to raise about ₹70 lakh for his election campaign. According to media reports, within hours of launching his crowdfunding campaign, he collected over ₹5 lakh.

During his campaign, while attacking the Bharatiya Janata Party and its candidate Giriraj Singh, Kumar said, “People of Begusarai will defeat Giriraj Singh and the BJP-led NDA will be defeated across Bihar as the people have made up their minds to oust Prime Minister Narendra Modi.”

“The people of Begusarai have decided not to support any hardliner. The BJP has been spreading hatred across the country,” he added.

Meanwhile, Giriraj Singh is reportedly unhappy for being fielded from Begusarai instead of Nawada, the constituency that he represented in the 16th Lok Sabha.
