New Delhi: Bharatiya Janata Party youth wing leader Priyanka Sharma, in Howrah, West Bengal, has been arrested for posting a morphed image of West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee on her Facebook account.

The morphed image, which she uploaded on Facebook went viral instantly after the news of her arrest spread on social media. The edited image shows Mamata Banerjee’s face superimposed over Priyanka Chopra’s recent Met Gala attire.

A complaint was immediately filed against Priyanka Sharma by Trinamool Congress member Vibhas Hazra. Priyanka’s Facebook profile describe her as ‘Howrah district club cell convenor at Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha-BJYM’.

The complaint said, “She not just tries (sic) to insult our Hon’ble chief minister, but also to insult the culture of Bengal by her post on Facebook, which is cybercrime.”

Following the arrest of Priyanka, a debate has erupted over the intolerance that prevails in the ‘Mamata government’. Interestingly, Banerjee has always accused the BJP government at the Centre of being intolerant.

This is not the first time that someone has been arrested for dissenting voices. In March 2019, author Tina Biswas, who had written a novel critical of the TMC chief, had alleged harassment during her book launch in Kolkata.

Last year, a man from Tripura was arrested for allegedly making demeaning remarks against Banerjee on social media.
