Kamal Nath.

Accusing the Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led government of systematic demolition of the “panchayati raj” in Madhya Pradesh, the state Congress president, Kamal Nath, cited winding up of two key schemes meant for the development of backward districts in the country through empowerment of panchayats to substantiate his claim.

In a series of tweets, Nath pointed out in one that “in 2014-15, the panchayati raj ministry had a budgetary allocation of Rs 7,000 crore which came down to Rs 94 crore in 2015-16.”

He tweeted: “This ministry had two main schemes – the backward regions grant fund (BRGF) for development of backward districts of the country and the Rajiv Gandhi Panchayati Sashaktikaran Abhiyan (RGPSA) to empower panchayats. The Modi government closed both schemes after 2015-16.”

Recalling how the Madhya Pradesh chief minister, Shivraj Singh Chouhan, would sit on fast during the tenure of Manmohan Singh, the former prime minister, he asked, “Why Chouhan is silent now?”
