Mamata Banerjee says ‘UGC regularly issuing fatwas to educational institutions’

Mamata Banerjee, the chief minister of West Bengal, on Monday, accused the University Grants Commission of stopping the scholarship grants to the researchers and issuing “fatwa” (Islamic religious diktat) to higher education institutes in the state.

After meeting the vice-chancellors of universities and the principles of colleges, she spoke to reporters and said, “We have received complaints from various colleges and universities about the UGC stopping grants for scholarship for PhD projects under National Eligibility Test.”

Th chief minister added that many representatives of universities and colleges have complained that the UGC is regularly issuing “fatwa” on different issues.

She said, “Many representatives of universities and colleges have also informed that they (the UGC) are regularly issuing ‘fatwa’ on different issues. This is not proper.”
