Sitaram Yechury.

Sitaram Yechury, general secretary of the Communist Party of India (Marxist), on Friday, said it would be wrong to say Hindus can’t be violent because there are many examples in epics and history that Hindu rulers were not averse to violence.

Speaking at a meeting – “Parliamentary System – Elections and Democracy” – in Bhopal , Yechury referred to the BJP’s Bhopal candidate Pragya Singh Thakur’s assertion that “Hindus don’t believe in violence” and said the Hindu epics of Ramayana and the Mahabharata are filled with instances of violence. He further said, “An attempt is made to portray followers of other religions as violent”.

He claimed that the BJP tried to change the political narrative by fielding Pragya Singh in Bhopal. He further added that after sensing defeat in the first three phases of polling, the BJP has taken this decision. He said the BJP had been trying to polarize voters on communal lines for a long time.
