New Delhi: The number of the new coronavirus, Covid-19, infections in the country has crossed 42,000, on Sunday, with 2,806 new cases and the death toll is now approaching 1,400 with 58 new deaths.

Gujarat led other states in daily deaths with 28 new deaths while Delhi led other states in the number of new infections with 427 new cases. Maharashtra continues to lead other states in the total number of Covid-19 cases and deaths so far. The state now has 12,296 confirmed cases and the death toll was 521 on Sunday.

Meanwhile, the Union health minister Harsh Vardhan, on Sunday, said the rate of growth of coronavirus cases in the country has steadied for the time being while the rate of patients recovering from the disease has increased. He expressed confidence that India will win the war against the virus.

Earlier on Sunday, the military expressed its gratitude on behalf of the nation to the frontline workers in the battle against Covid-19. The Indian Air Force conducted flypasts across the country and showered flower petals on health workers from helicopters.

The Army played bands in hospitals, especially where Covid-19 patients were being treated. It also laid wreaths on police memorials in respect of the policemen enforcing the lockdown and protecting health workers from hostile sections of the population by risking their lives. Many policemen contacted the disease in the line of their duty, and some have also died.

The Navy, on its part, illuminated its warships and formed human chain saluting the “corona warriors”.

US says ‘enormous evidence’ coronavirus came from China lab

On Sunday, the United States secretary of state, Mike Pompeo, said there was “enormous evidence” that showed the new coronavirus, Covid-19, came from a Chinese lab. His statement further fuelled tensions between Beijing and Washington following earlier suggestion by the US president, Donald Trump, that China had been dishonest on the coronavirus and insinuated that the pandemic was a result of Beijing’s mischief.

During an interview with ABC, Pompeo, who is a former CIA chief, said he agreed with the US intelligence community’s assessment that Covid-19 was not man-made or genetically modified. However, he added “I think the whole world can see now, remember, China has a history of infecting the world and running substandard laboratories.”

He then said, “President Trump is very clear: we’ll hold those responsible accountable.”
