New Delhi: The prime minister, Narendra Modi, on Sunday, acknowledged the role played by the states in dealing with the coronavirus crisis while saying helping the poor is his government’s top priority at this moment. This comes at a time when hundreds of thousands of migrant workers are stranded in cities without job or money, hundreds, even thousands, of kilometres from their native places.

While addressing the nation in his “Mann Ki Baat” radio programme, Modi praised the efforts of the state governments in their fight against the new coronavirus, Covid-19, and said, “The responsibilities being borne by local administrations and state governments are critical in the fight against the corona(virus). Their hard work is worthy of praise.”

The prime minister said his government’s top priority is to help the poor in this crisis. Modi said the country’s fight against the coronavirus is people-driven and along with the people, the government and the administration are fighting the pandemic.

While highlighting the steps taken by his government, Modi said, “Money is being directly transferred into accounts of the poor as part of Pradhan Mantri Gareeb Kalyan package. The old-age pension is being disbursed. The poor are being provided facilities like free of cost gas cylinders and rations for three months.”
