Akhilesh Yadav.

Samajwadi party chief and former chief minister of Uttar Pradesh Akhilesh Yadav lashed out to his state chief minister, Yogi Adityanath, and his government’s move to rename the city of Allahabad as Prayagraj. While attacking Adityanath, Yadav stated that the “present rulers wanted to show their work only by renaming (things).”

During his visit to Allahabad, Adityanath, on Saturday, had announced that his government will change the name of Allahabad to Prayagraj ahead of the 2019 Kumbh Mela.

Tweeting in Hindi, on Monday, Yadav wrote: “King Harshavardhana had named ‘Prayag Kumbh’ through his donation and today’s rulers want to show their work by only changing the name ‘Prayagraj’.  He has also changed the name of ‘Ardh Kumbh’ to ‘Kumbh’. It's messing with the tradition and faith.”

Earlier, the current UP chief minister Adityanath had said: “Some persons are objecting to renaming Allahabad as Prayagraj. The objections are baseless. It is the right of the government to rename any city. If needed, we will rename more cities and roads. The mistakes done earlier will be rectified.” He further said the UP governor, Ram Naik, had already supported the demands of the saints and the people of the Sangam city.

He said, “The government will soon send a proposed to the Centre to change the name of the city.”
